Common Reasons for Toothaches

It’s a common question: Why does my tooth hurt? There are a number of reasons why you may have a severe or persistent toothache. Some of the most common reasons for toothaches include:

  • Dental decay (cavities)
  • Abscessed tooth
  • Crown came off
  • Loose filling
  • Cracked tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Tooth knocked loose
  • Tooth knocked out
  • Enamel worn thin by teeth grinding
  • Sinus pressure

When you come in for an appointment at Family Dental Group in Fishkill, our emergency dentist will examine the problem area and take any x-rays needed to diagnose the problem. Then our team will discuss the problem with you and formulate a treatment plan that will eliminate the pain and restore your smile.

Tooth Sensitivity can be a Warning Sign of a Dental Emergency

Sometimes a toothache comes on suddenly. Other times, it may start with mild sensitivity to hot, cold, acidic, or sweet foods and beverages. Even cold air can irritate the tooth.

Tooth sensitivity is very common. Approximately 40 million Americans experience tooth sensitivity each year, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. As the enamel that protects teeth wears down or is damaged, it exposes the soft dentin in the middle of the tooth, which contains the nerves of the tooth, causing the tooth to be more sensitive.

Even a hairline crack in the tooth could cause a painful toothache. When you bite down, you put pressure on the tooth, causing the crack to widen. When the teeth pull apart, the pressure is released and you can may feel sensitivity or pain as the crack closes again. That opening-and-closing motion can irritate the pulp and nerve tissue inside the tooth.

If you experience any tooth sensitivity, call our dentist today for an appointment. It’s always best to treat a dental problem early, before it has a chance to worsen.

Root Canal Treatment: Save Your Natural Tooth

The most common dental emergency is pain brought on deep cavities. If dental decay is caught early, it can usually be treated with a filling. If it is left untreated, the decay spreads from the enamel to the pulp of the tooth, which contains the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels. The nerves become irritated, infected and inflamed, which can be extremely painful.

Our emergency dentist in Fishkill performs root canal treatment to eliminate the pain and save the natural tooth. The dentist will remove the nerves from the root canals and then cap the tooth with a crown to prevent food particles and bacteria from entering.

While many people joke they’re rather do anything than get a root canal, the root canal procedure is actually very comfortable. Most people say it feels about the same as getting a filling. Best of all, you’ll go home from the root canal pain-free.

Tooth Extractions

In some cases, the tooth can’t be saved after a dental emergency. If you had a tooth knocked out, cracked beyond repair, or too deeply damaged by cavities, then the best option may be for the emergency dentist to remove the tooth.

Tooth extractions eliminate toothaches, but obviously you’re left with a hole where the tooth had been. If that space is not replaced with an artificial tooth, then the surrounding teeth can drift out of position. That can impact how you speak and how you chew. It can also impact your self-confidence, especially if the gap is visible to others.

Fortunately, there are many ways to replace a missing tooth:

  • Dental Implant: A dental implant is a stable, long-lasting tooth replacement option. It is placed into the socket left by the missing tooth so it mimics the tooth roots and reduces bone loss in that area. A dental implant can be topped by a crown. READ MORE
  • Dental Bridge: A three-point dental bridge is a popular option for replacing a missing tooth. The healthy teeth on either side of the gap are topped by crowns attached to an artificial tooth in the middle. READ MORE
  • Partial Denture: A partial denture is another common way to replace a missing tooth. READ MORE
