Today’s dentures are more comfortable, affordable, and aesthetically-pleasing than ever before. They are a time-tested way to replace missing teeth and there are several types of dentures to choose from.

If you are missing one or more teeth, you are not alone. More than 35 million Americans do not have any teeth, and 178 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth, according to The American College of Prosthodontists. Missing teeth can lead to a series of problems including poor nutrition because it’s difficult to eat and lower self-confidence because one’s appearance can change dramatically. If you’re missing several or all of your teeth, your jaw line loses its shape, your lips flatten, your chip protrudes, and wrinkles can increase. Fortunately, dentures can restore your facial contours, giving you a more youthful appearance.

If you’re interested in getting dentures in Fishkill, call our dental office today.

Types of Removable Dentures

Complete and partial dentures consist of artificial teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base. As the names suggest, a complete denture contains a full set of artificial teeth and is used when you have lost all of your top or bottom teeth. A partial denture contains fewer artificial teeth, and is constructed to fit around your natural teeth to fill in any gaps in your smile.

Both types of removable dentures sit on the gums and are held in place by the suctioning effect of their close fit and by over-the-counter denture adhesive paste. As time passes and the shape of your gum line changes, the dentures will need to be relined to ensure the fit remains tight. It’s important to come back to our Fishkill dental office for regular visits so the dentist can check the fit of your denture and the health of your mouth.

Immediate Denture

An immediate denture is a temporary complete denture that you can wear home the same day that your natural teeth have been removed. It won’t fit as well as your final denture will, but it will provide you with a set of teeth to make eating and speaking easier. This is a removable denture; you remove it to clean daily.

Complete Denture

A complete denture is crafted to look like your own natural teeth, and the base is custom-fit to your gum line once it’s healed from the tooth extractions. This is also a removable denture that is removed daily to clean.

Transitional Partial Denture

This temporary plastic denture is also known as a flipper. It is frequently used when just a single tooth is missing and the person needs a temporary replacement until a dental implant can be placed and capped with a crown. It’s nicknamed the flipper because it’s easy for the tongue to flip them out.

Removable Partial Denture

A partial denture contains some replacement teeth and clasps that anchor them to your natural teeth. There are several types of removable partial dentures, including flexible partial dentures that are thin and more comfortable than traditional partial dentures. Flexible partials can also contain gum-colored clasps instead of metal clasps. These are more natural-looking.

Implant-Supported Dentures

A traditional denture rests on the gum line, using the suctioning effect of the mouth to hold it in place. If you want a more secure fit, consider a denture anchored by dental implants. As few as two dental implants can keep the denture from slipping and provide more stability when eating and speaking.
